- Prepare Your Card: Have a major international credit card (Visa, Mastercard, JCB, Discover, Diners Club) ready. Ensure it is enabled for international transactions.
2.The Payment Giants: Alipay vs. WeChat Pay
Almost 99% of transactions in China are handled via mobile payment.
- Alipay: We recommend this as your primary choice. It features a tourist-friendly interface with real-time currency conversion and a seamless card-binding process.
- WeChat Pay: While essential for social communication, WeChat Pay can occasionally be subject to stricter security controls. It’s great to have as a backup.

4.Critical Skills: Scan-to-Pay vs. QR Code Payment
There are only two ways to pay in China:
- A. “Scan to Pay”: Used at small shops or stalls. Open your app’s “Scan” feature and scan the merchant’s QR code, then enter the amount.
- B. “Show Your QR Code”: Used at supermarkets or restaurants. Open the “Pay” icon and show your personal QR code to the merchant.

5.Troubleshooting & Tips
Check your internet connection. We highly recommend getting an eSIM that supports China roaming. Also, ensure your bank hasn’t flagged your transaction as “suspicious.”
As a tourist, you are in “Tourist Mode.” You only need the Scan-to-Pay function, which covers all your travel needs.
Yes. By law, merchants cannot refuse cash. Keep 500-1000 RMB as a final backup.
